Emirati Women Lead AI Innovation Efforts

Emirati Women’s Day, introduced in 2015 by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Al Ketbi, serves as a key annual occasion to celebrate and raise the achievements of Emirati women across diverse sectors. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader national agenda to advance gender equality and harness female potential as a cornerstone of sustainable development. A prominent arena where this empowerment is visibly manifest is Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), where Emirati women are emerging as trailblazers in cutting-edge fields such as natural language processing (NLP) and ethical AI. With 34 Emirati women enrolled among the university’s 381 students from 49 countries, their presence shows a deliberate effort to cultivate a diverse and inclusive academic environment that supports innovation. These students are not only participants but active contributors to research and development, reflecting a strategic alignment between the UAE’s digital transformation goals and the empowerment of its female population.

One notable example is Fatima AlKhoori, a Ph.D. candidate in machine learning who has completed a second master’s degree in the same field, demonstrating a deep commitment to her discipline. Her research on autonomous vehicles focuses on enhancing their ability to recognize traffic signs under varying environmental conditions, such as adverse weather or complex urban settings. This work addresses a critical technical challenge in the deployment of self-driving technology, ensuring that AI systems can operate safely and reliably across diverse scenarios. By integrating advanced machine learning algorithms with real-world testing protocols, AlKhoori’s efforts contribute to the global push for safer, more adaptive autonomous systems.

Dr. Hanan Aldarmaki, an assistant professor at MBZUAI since 2022, specializes in Arabic speech and language processing, with a particular emphasis on improving speech recognition and synthesis for Arabic and its numerous dialects. Her projects extend beyond technical innovation, encompassing research on speech and language disorders, which aims to develop tools that assist individuals with communication challenges. Her involvement with the UAE Graduate Students Research Conference steering committee further highlights her dedication to supporting academic collaboration and mentorship among young researchers, ensuring that the next generation of scholars benefits from interdisciplinary exchange.

Maha Alblooki, a master’s student in NLP, is leveraging AI to safeguard Emirati cultural heritage by incorporating Arabic proverbs into language models. Her thesis work includes refining OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technologies specifically for Arabic text, which is key for the digitization of historical manuscripts, religious texts, and other culturally significant documents. This effort not only preserves linguistic traditions but also enhances the accessibility of these materials for future generations, bridging the gap between technological progress and cultural continuity.

Maitha Alshehhi, a master’s student in machine learning, is recognized as a top innovator by G42 Cloud in 2023, a distinction that reflects her commitment to ethical AI practices. Her research emphasizes the development of AI systems that prioritize transparency, fairness, and inclusivity, ensuring that technological advancements do not inadvertently perpetuate biases or exclude marginalized communities. By integrating ethical frameworks into AI design, Alshehhi’s work aligns with global standards for responsible innovation, positioning the UAE as a leader in morally grounded technological development.

Wafa Alghallabi, an MBZUAI alumna now pursuing her Ph.D., is advancing medical imaging technologies to improve diagnostic accuracy in healthcare. Her startup, which was awarded first place at MBZUAI’s Incubation and Entrepreneurship Centre’s Pitch Day, employs AI to enhance the detection of medical conditions, offering a tangible example of women-led innovation in critical sectors. This achievement not only highlights the UAE’s investment in female entrepreneurship but also shows the potential of AI to transform healthcare outcomes on a global scale.
